Mombasa has a very high population of young Muslims and is considered in many ways a Muslim city. Given this, there is definitely a need to impart knowledge and information to these Muslim youth about Islamic culture and way of life. If western ideas become widespread, there is a risk that the Muslims in Mombasa may lose their cultural identity, and in future the Muslim way of life will become a thing of the past. Ideally Muslim culture and way of life is governed by the teachings of the Holy Quran (The Holy Book of the Muslims) and Islamic Shariah (Islamic law). Therefore, if there is a strong western influence, there is also the risk of the teachings of the Quran and Shariah law losing their importance and meaning in society. This could ultimately lead to conflicts between those who follow strictly the Islamic way of life as taught in the Quran and the Shariah on the one hand, and those who have been influenced by the west on the other. It is important then to address this problem to prevent such potential conflicts, and to ensure that Muslim culture and way of life is not ignored or forgotten.
